Why You Should Use the Same Photographer for Your Engagement Session and Wedding
Your engagement session is about more than getting a few beautiful photographs before your wedding. It’s also one of the best opportunities to get comfortable with your photographer, experience how they work, and build a relationship before the wedding day arrives.
For most couples, their wedding photographer is one of the vendors they’ll spend the most time with on their wedding day. Having already worked together can make the entire photography experience feel more natural from the moment coverage begins.
That’s one of the reasons I love photographing both the engagement session and wedding for my couples.

Your Engagement Session Is Basically a Practice Run
Most couples I photograph aren’t models, and I don’t expect them to be.
One of the most common things I hear before a session is some version of, “We’re awkward in front of the camera.”
That’s completely normal.
An engagement session gives us an opportunity to figure out what feels natural to you as a couple without the timeline or pressure of a wedding day.
You'll learn how I give direction, when I step in, and when I simply let a moment happen. At the same time, I'll learn how the two of you naturally interact.
By the time your wedding arrives, we aren't figuring everything out for the first time.
You Become Comfortable With Your Photographer
Comfort makes a huge difference in photographs.
If the first time we work together is on your wedding day, we're building that relationship while everything else is already happening around you. An engagement session gives us time to get to know each other beforehand.
You get to experience my personality and approach behind the camera, and I get to learn more about you—not only how you photograph, but what makes you laugh, how affectionate you naturally are, and what kind of direction feels comfortable.
That familiarity can make the wedding day feel significantly easier. Instead of thinking about the camera, you can focus more on each other and what's actually happening.
I Learn How You Naturally Interact
Every couple is different.
Some couples are naturally affectionate. Some constantly make each other laugh. Some are quieter and more reserved. Others have a playful energy and rarely stop moving.
I don't want every couple I photograph to look exactly the same.
My approach is natural, timeless, and documentary-focused, so a big part of my job is understanding your relationship and photographing it in a way that feels authentic to the two of you.
The engagement session gives me an opportunity to learn that before the wedding. I can see which types of direction create genuine reactions, what feels natural, and what doesn't.
That information carries directly into how I photograph your wedding day.
You Learn That You Don't Have to Constantly Pose
One misconception about professional photography is that you need to know exactly what to do with your hands, where to look, or how to pose.
You don't.
During an engagement session, I'll give you direction when it's helpful, but I'm often creating opportunities for something natural to happen rather than placing you into a pose and asking you to hold it.
We might walk, talk, move through a location, or simply give you space to interact with each other.
Once you've experienced that during your engagement session, there's much less uncertainty on the wedding day. You've already learned that you don't need to perform for the camera.
Your Wedding Portraits Can Move Much Faster
Wedding days have timelines. You might have 20 or 30 minutes for portraits before needing to get back to cocktail hour or your reception.
When we've already photographed your engagement session together, we have a head start.
You understand my direction. I understand the two of you. We've already figured out what works.
That can make portraits much more efficient while still keeping them relaxed. I'd rather create beautiful photographs quickly and send you back to enjoy your wedding than turn your wedding day into an hours-long photoshoot.
Your Photos Feel Consistent From Engagement to Wedding
Using the same photographer also gives your engagement and wedding photographs a consistent visual identity.
Your engagement session and wedding are two different chapters of the same story.
Working with the same photographer means the approach to composition, color, editing, skin tones, movement, and storytelling remains consistent between the two.
That can be particularly valuable if you're planning to use engagement photographs throughout your wedding—for save-the-dates, your wedding website, guest book, framed prints, or other details.
Your Photographer Already Knows What's Important to You
Your engagement session also gives us more time to talk.
While we're photographing, I naturally learn more about your relationship, your personalities, and what you're planning for the wedding.
By the time the wedding arrives, you're no longer simply another name and date on my calendar. I have a better understanding of who you are and what matters to you.
That becomes particularly important with documentary wedding photography because some of the most meaningful photographs aren't necessarily the obvious ones.
Knowing about important relationships, family members, traditions, or moments you're especially excited about helps me understand where my attention should be throughout the day.
Make it stand out
It Builds Trust Before the Wedding
Ultimately, this may be the biggest reason I recommend working with the same photographer.
By your wedding day, you already know what it's like to be photographed by me. You've seen how I work. You've received a finished gallery. You know how I communicate.
And you've seen how the moments that may have felt completely ordinary while they were happening translate into finished photographs.
That creates trust.
And when you trust your photographer, it's much easier to stop thinking about photography and simply experience your wedding.
That's exactly what I want.
Make Your Engagement Session Feel Like You
Your engagement photographs don't need to look like everyone else's.
The session could happen somewhere meaningful to your relationship, around your favorite neighborhood, at the beach at sunrise, downtown, in a bar or restaurant, somewhere with beautiful architecture, or even somewhere completely ordinary that represents your life together.
The location matters less to me than creating an environment where the two of you can actually interact.
That's when photographs begin to feel personal rather than simply pretty.
Engagement Photography + Cinematic Film
For couples who want something beyond photographs, I also offer the option of adding a short cinematic engagement film.
Photography preserves individual moments, while film allows you to remember the movement, interactions, laughter, and energy between you.
It can be incorporated into the same session and gives you another way to document this season of your relationship before the wedding.
Planning Your Engagement Session and Wedding in South Florida?
If you're planning a wedding in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Palm Beach, Jupiter, or anywhere throughout South Florida, I'd love to hear what you're envisioning.
My approach to engagement sessions and weddings is natural, timeless, and documentary-focused, with enough direction to help you feel comfortable while leaving space for genuine moments to happen on their own.
When I have the opportunity to photograph both your engagement session and wedding, the engagement session becomes the beginning of that relationship. By the time the wedding arrives, we've already worked together, you know what to expect, and I can focus on documenting your day in a way that feels true to you.
